At the minimum, back up the system state that includes your DNS server, Windows system files, COM+ class registration database, and more. Know what FSMO is and the process of transfer/seize. Also, follow the 3-2-1 rule where you keep two backups on different media locally and one offsite. 
Understand that not all domain controllers are the same, so have a backup strategy accordingly. Backup your active directory at least once daily and twice or more if it is large. Create a document that includes your backup policy, frequency, disaster recovery plan, and more. Enable the Active Directory Recycle Bin so that you can restore deleted objects quickly. Backup at least two domain controllers, if you can’t do a complete backup. That said, do a regular backup, so you can restore when all your controllers fail due to a virus attack, database corruption, or other reasons. Have multiple domain controllers to provide a full recovery without a backup when one of your domain controllers fail. Understand the difference before choosing the one that best fits your situation. There are two types of restoration, namely an authoritative restore and a non-authoritative restore. On the next screen, click on the Next button.Read through this section first before attempting an Active Directory backup and restoration. In the right-pane, scroll down and click on System Protection link, located under “Related Settings”. Once the computer restarts, press the F4 key and it will boot or Start in Safe Mode.Īfter the computer starts in Safe Mode, go to Settings > System and select the About tab in left-pane. In the right-pane, scroll down and click on the Restart Now button, located under “Advanced Startup” section.Īfter computer restarts, go to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings and click on the Restart button. 
If you are already logged-in, go to Settings > Update & Security > select Recovery in the left-pane.
Note: If you are unable to login to the computer, you can enter Safe Mode using a bootable USB Drive. In certain cases, you may find it necessary to boot computer in Safe Mode and perform System Restore in Safe Mode. In many cases, problems on the computer can be fixed by performing a regular System Restore, while you are normally logged into the computer.
